Hailing from the tiny town of Mangalore Aishwarya Rai, or Gullu as she is fondly called, is one of India's most popular celebrities, most notably from her Miss World win in 1994. Though her first few movies flopped she has gone on to achieve stardom, critical acclaim and numerous awards.
She is the first Indian actress to be on the jury of the Cannes International Film Festival, the first actress and performer from India to be featured on the cover of Time magazine, and the only Indian woman to be listed as one of the world's Top 10 good-looking women. Her performance in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam took everyone by surprise, revealing that she was more than just a beautiful model, but a talented actress as well.
