Dropping out of high school at age 17, he worked a minimum-wage job as a dishwasher and cook.

His first commercial album, released in 1999, debuted at #2 on the charts, went triple platinum within a year and was later certified 5x platinum. In 2003 the album was ranked 273 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

After a three year hiatus and a stint in the hospital, he recently announced plans for a sixth album.
