First look at Martin Margiela's debut jewellery collection with Damiani

I Like It I Don't Like It
See More... When I first heard Maison Martin Margiela would be doing a fine jewellery collection, I was a little surprised. And then when it was revealed the collaboration involved the very commercial Damiani brand, I was very surprised. To say the least.

Martin Margiela is anything but commercial. But after seeing a preview of the collection that will hit stores in November, it all made sense. Obviously, Damiani gave Margiela substantial creative control. The pieces are exaggerated and conceptual, just like his brand.

The collection includes this necklace composed of giant oval links, a pierced earring magnified to become a chunky ring and a signet ring upsized to bracelet proportions.

The entire line of 14 items will be avilable in 14 Margiela boutiques, along with a selection of fashion retailers, including Maxfield in Los Angeles, On Pedder in Hong Kong, 10 Corso Como in Milan, Exception in Madrid and Saba Song in Vienna. I have yet to hear of an outlet in Antwerp, but will keep you posted.

Prices for the pieces — in yellow gold, pink gold and silver, with diamonds — will range from 700 euros to 39,500 euros. The collection is being shown to retailers
at Margiela’s Paris showrooms, so hopefully someone here will pick it up. Or maybe we can see it at his ModeMuseum run in September? Who knows what that will bring. I can't wait.

I am really liking the necklace. It is has both an everday and 'occasional' appeal - something very hard to achieve. The ring is maybe not so practical for typing at my desk, but it is definitely a statement piece, which I am sure many Antwerpaans will want to make.

Rumours are also swirling about a new eyewear collection for spring 2009 and a first scent with L'Oreal for fall 2009. Looks like someone is expanding!
