I was saddened to read a recent story by New York Magazine revealing that with the economic recession hitting retailers hard, young designers like Alexander Wang, Philip Lim and even Proenza Schouler's sales are disproportionately suffering as shoppers opt for more well-known brands. The magasine even went as far as suggesting some designers might not even manage the expense of New York fashion week come September.
On the one hand, I can see why some people may choose a big name over a lesser known label. For instance, those that save up for months to buy the Balenciaga Lariat after realising it is not going out of style anytime soon and is a justified investment piece. But what about those women that need not to save and throw down money regularly for all the big-name labels?
Proenza Schouler's collections, for instance, have by far outpaced many of the old design houses for multiple seasons now, which naturally would lead to strong sales. However, this has not been confirmed to be the case. I think it's unfortunate then that when the going gets tough, many women are choosing a name over substance.
So, even though Blake was probably given this outfit to wear - the fact that she chose it over a similarly gifted Gucci ensemble, is very commendable. It says she is a leader and not a follower, and as a young actress feels compelled to support other young creatives.
As if I needed another reason to watch Gossip Girl! I am officially (and pathetically, I may add) obsessed.

Do you think Taylor Momsen, a.k.a. Jenny Humphrey on Gossip Girl, is TOO mature for a 15 year old?
