Mamilla (Maria Sharapova + Camilla Belle): the new Bennifer?

See More... Remember "Bennifer", the super couple pairing of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez? Their highly publicized relationship became so popular with the media and their fans that they coined the portmanteau that eventually found its way into urban dictionaries and kick-started the phenomenon of combining celebrity couples' names into one catchy word.

The latest portmanteau that seems to have captured the imagination of at least the lesbian contingent on After Ellen and various tennis forums is "Mamilla", the sensuous, boob-fuelling rumored love match between sexy blonde tennis star Maria Sharapova and her stunning brunette breast friend forever, Hollywood starlet Camilla Belle, who have apparently been trading romantic -for-tat on the celebrity red carpet.

Now whether the two are actually muff diving and carpet munching remains purely the subject of sapphic speculation and fanboy fantasy (unless of course, you're one of those who remain convinced that there's some hanky panky still going on between Maria and Serbian star Novak Djokovic). There's plenty of circumstantial evidence around that can be interpreted either way, although in all honesty, even though lately it does look as if there may be some definite girl-girl leanings going on that transcend the purely platonic, everything is generally rather innocent and easily the kind of behavior that two close friends could reasonably exhibit.

One thing that may be telling however is that on Maria Sharapova's official site, the webmaster originally posted some pictures of the happy couple... er make that best friends.... on their European trip together. Again, this was purely innocent: just two friends having a good time together, but within a day those pictures were taken down without so much as a word of explanation. Now it could be purely coincidence, but why remove these photos if there is nothing wrong with them? Has the weight of public speculation begun to take its toll on the Sharapova-Belle camp?

Whatever the relationship (and it's probably none of our business), you can understand why the two would want to avoid a storm of media controversy. First of all, both Sharapova and Belle are extremely private individuals, with neither wishing to stoke the fires of any kind of relationship rumor, whether male or female. Secondly, it can't be good for publicity, with Belle a rising celebrity on the brink of stardom and Sharapova the golden goose for a multitude of sponsors. However, as many fans have pointed out, and I would have to agree, was the removal of those Mamilla pictures really the best decision? Didn't it draw more attention that something was not quite right? Had they left the pictures there, while it might have fuelled more gossip, at least it wouldn't signal trouble brewing.

It's here again that I'm reminded of Bennifer. Remember how that couple eventually succumbed to all of the papparazi pressure and over-exposure? A few days before their planned nuptials their lovey-dovey relationship came crashing down around them much to their fans' chagrin, and Affleck temporarily withdrew from public life. Now even if Sharapova and Belle are mere platonic friends, we should learn the lesson from Bennifer. Even Affleck himself seems to have taken this lesson to heart, and his marriage to actress Jennifer Garner (with the couple sometimes nicknamed "Garfleck" instead of Bennifer 2) is a decidedly more private affair. I'd hate to see Sharapova and Belle's wonderful friendship ruined by milking the Mamilla pairing for all it's worth. Maybe it's time to nip the sapphic speculation in the bud and let them live out their friendship or love match in private, and if or when they feel the time is right, they'll choose to come out of their own accord. Let's not pressure them. We may live to regret it and thereby kill the geese that lay the golden eggs just for one extra nugget to satisfy our insatiable desire for gossip.

We don't need another Bennifer.

  • as much as i'm wary to concur, i concur. i 'spose.
i would never want their relationship, no matter the nature of it, to be spoiled. but how loverly would it be to see them really 'together' together. ya know, if they really are.

ps. the pix being removed are definitely not coincidence. every pic from her euro trip is there *except* every single one of her and camilla. that's no coincidence. and yes, a very silly move by their PR people.

    • I makes them seem guilty but then again they could just be paranoid.
