I Like It I Don't Like It
See More... The usually chipper and funny Ellen DeGeneres is getting serious and somber in a new public service announcement, where she encourages California voters to vote against Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that would ban marriage between same-sex couples.

Ellen, who married longtime love Portia de Rossi on Aug. 16, posted the video PSA on her show’s website, on which she said:

“I got to do something this year that I never thought I’d be able to do -- I got married. It was the happiest day of my life. There are people out there raising millions of dollars to try to take that right away from me. You’ve seen their ads on TV. They’re twisting the truth, and they’re trying to scare you. I believe in fairness. I believe in compassion. I believe in equality for all people -- Proposition 8 does not. Please, please vote no on Prop. 8.”

Other celebs taking a stance against Prop. 8 include Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg, who have each contributed $100,000 to defeat the measure.

    • Yes, God loves me and he knows I'm gay and he knows that I don't read the Bible literally or like a road map.

  • homo-phobics will always be. What are they afraid of? Every person should have the right to marriage. Doesn't matter man to man or woman to woman.

The real sin are these religious nuts.

  • While we are banning gay marriage can we bring back lynchings too?

  • I will vote against Prop. 8. The gay community as citizens of US of America should have the right to be protected under the laws of the Constitution. They should also have the rights privileges that all Americans enjoy not just the right to be married. They obey the laws, they pay their taxes, they are decent and responsible citizens. They should have the same rights as heterosexuals.

  • Hell is not false just because you don't believe in it. Some folks just choose to go there with a bang instead of a whimper. Following Hollywood's logic (together with the secular, humanistic folks), polyandry and polygamy are next in line, because no type of grouping is sacrosanct. And then, hey, why not marry your father or mother or brother or child? Wisdom is proved right by her actions.

  • Thank goodness (and God) for those who are not afraid to stand up for what is right. Gays and lesbians should have every right that straights have. You GO GIRL!

  • How the heck is that a PSA? It is a political ad. She should be paying for it and it should count towards the time opponents of Prop. 8 get on the airwaves. Public Service? What a crock!

  • Religious zealots will be very surprised when they get "where they are going" and see people they just KNEW were going to Hell in the same place as they are. It's not what religion you are, whether you sit in church every Sunday - it's how you treat other people. That's REAL Christianity.

    • Its not how you just treat other people. You have to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior and that is what is going to determine where you are going!!!

  • I'm a gay man living with my partner. We are not married nor have we registered as domestic partners yet. We have no plans on getting married at this time. That's why it is insulting to us that this matter is being decided on by the voters. It is so unfair and humiliating to be treated like a second-class citizen. California was the first state to make interracial marriages legal and the rest of the country followed. Please vote no on 8.

  • Notice that the religionists, like anonymous, pretend to know the mind of their diety?
What arrogance! These self-deluded nuts are a danger to society and themselves. Personal choices, in matters of love, are none of religion's business. jMcG

  • Thanks, Ellen. You have been the greatest voice the gay community could have as you show yourself to be a sweet, talented and lovely person. I hope your voice has power and overrules the voices of hate and ignorance. Who is ANYONE so brazenly judge? Who made THEM God? Let them remove the speck in their own eye before they sees the speck in another's.

Let the forces of intellect, knowledge and understanding of the evolutionary variety of human sexuality prevail. We in Massachusetts see how great universal freedom to marry can be. Gay marriage has done NOTHING negative to heterosexuals but it has meant everything positive to those who nature dictates are gay.

  • God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve! It also says that we are not to judge a person, so I think that if you want to live an alternative lifestyle go ahead and do it, but don't expect that you should be allow to get legally married, something God created for a man and a woman!

    • Adam and Eve were NEVER married. God didn't CREATE marriage, man did.

      Get a grip.
      anonymous anonymous 10/15/08

    • By that definition, anyone hetrosexual couple not married in a Christian ceremony is not legally married.

  • Instead of ripping off someone else's culture, why not press for civil unions and whine and bleat until civil unions get the same privileges.

And don't expect me to take the issue seriously until more gays really want marriage. Who needs a statistic claiming 5% of glbts bother (and there are, what, 5% of the general populace), but as a bi man wanting to work with another person in a monogamous relationship, gay men do not want a relationship. Just 'wham bam, thank you mister'. I'll date women and CHOOSE to ignore those feelings I might have for any man. No fuss, no muss.

    • Really, and to think heterosexuals really do believe in monogamy and respect the institution of marriage with a 50% divorce rate and an adultary rate almost as high. Hmmm...am I living on another planet or are you just an obsessively compulsive homophobic?

  • Also, to those who claim to have "partners" and don't want to marry or whatever, take your business elsewhere or get used to being second class citizens. You're helping nobody if you don't want something and then get annoyed when someone else steps in. Actually, you proved more than you could have imagined for, and not in your favor.

    • Whoa!!! Calm down there, Sparky. The only reason my partner and I have not decided to get married yet is because we've only been together for TWO YEARS. We are still growing in our relationship and don't think marriage is something to jump into just because it's legal now. I've donated money and time to the no on 8 cause and will continue to do so. The day will come when will decide to marry. Peace.

  • Don't we have anything better to do than interfere in the romantic lives of strangers. This is a moral question best left to each individual and not the government. Why don't politicians focus on issues that matter like the economy?

  • To the self-righteous:

I just talked to God five minutes ago. Really, we talk all the time. He told me you should check out the Gospels. Fascinating stuff. Apparently, this Jesus fellow pretty much preached nothing but love, compassion, forgiveness...loving your brother, not hating your enemy, turning the other cheek...all kinds of crazy maverick-y stuff. Go figure.

  • God did not create marriage! I see absolutley no referance to a ceremony of Marriage in the Garden of Eden in the Bible. Man created Marriage and I do believe that it was a way to legalize his ownership of a woman or women nothing more. In the begining it simply established ownership. Only thru continually changing laws to make them fair and equal did we get todays definition of marriage.

    • It is now time to change the definition of Marriage once again to keep it fair and equal. I am no better than you and you are no better than I. After all Marriage has become a legal arrangement and should be treated as such. You have to buy a license which is a legal permit.

  • It's a sin? Tough. It's between me and God. Get over yourself. Your own God invented freewill. So just who do you think YOU are to ignore it?

  • I believe in same sex "civil union" that provides legalities but do not believe in the term "marriage" to be applied to same sex unions.

  • It's a sin to lie, commit adultry, steal, etc., but it's done every day, often by the person sitting next to you in church-or even yourself. 'It's a sin" is not a reason to deny someone their American rights.

  • It is about time that we start taking the Bible GOD's word serious . Remember the cities of Sodom and Gomorah. It is not about feeling, it is about what is right in the sight of God and man Two women or two men cannot pro-create. Then where is the problem with your understanding ?????
    anonymous anonymous 10/15/08 Reply

  • I couldn't procreate either, but my husband married me (his wife) anyway and we're very happy thank you very much! Sorry, procreation is not a good reason-lot's of couples don't/can't have kids & we honor them.

  • Also, your 16 y/o daughters will be needing someone to adopt their baby since you will surely insist they endure 9 mos. of pregnancy and childbirth for nothing. See-it's a good thing!

  • It really doesn't matter to me if you want to get "married", that is between you and God. If it is not, then it is not a marriage, it is just a legal agreement. Resolve your logic and behavior with God first. Just remember sins are passed down to the tenth generation.
