I've been dying to find out what was really said in those meetings in which
Clive Davis, head of Arista Records, tried to convince Kelly to drop some of
her songs from the new album because they just weren't good enough. He
apparently offered her an additional $10 million to change it but she didn't
want the money.
In the August issue of Blender Magazine Kelly's finally spilling it. She
says she told Clive Davis, "I don't know you very well, and I am not a
[bleep]. I get (that) you don't like the album. You're 80; you're not
supposed to like my album.
"I literally got told to my face that it wouldn't sell more than 600,000
copies. And I got lied to. One reason I don't like working with people at
the label is that they lie. ... If you're going with the flow and not
fighting, that's settling. I can't take that. Life is just too short to be a
pushover."
My December debuted at #2 and sold over 291,000 copies in the first week,
but whether or not it will have the massive success of her previous two CDs
remains to be seen. I've heard it, and I agree with Clive Davis - it sucks.
Go Kelly for sticking up for herself and standing up to the big boss. but I
just hope this - and her bitter attude lately - don't backfire on her. she
used to be so sweet!
