Rolling Stone's "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" Do you agree?
I do not agree with Hendrix being above Page, Clapton, Gilmore, or Barrett, but the rest I can honestly say I agree with

The things that hendrix could do was amazing and he taught himself. I mean, he could play behind his head and and with his teeth.
-
-
They have left out so many people: Joe Pass, Al DiMeola, Ynwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Paco De Lucia, Larry Coryell, Frank Gambale, Stanley Clarke, Strunz & Farah, Chet Atkins, Doc Watson, Ricky Skaggs, Pat Metheny, Stanley Jordan...can go on and on....
Is this based off of Guitar talent? Or Popularity? -
where's Slash
-
obviously some retard
-
-
Joan Jett before Angus Young
who at Rolling Stone made this list-
I agree with you 100 percent!!!
-
-
no slash? ridiculous list
-
I still don't know why Hendrix is at the top, Page is the all time best guitar player. Even.
-
page wouldent even be in my top 100000
-
-
P.S. Who votes to write a complaint about this list?
-
you seriously dont know guitarists.
paige may not be the best but he is definately a hundred times better than slash.
SLASH IS THE MOST OVER HYPED UP GUITARIST THERE IS RIGHT NOW. he is good ill give you that but he is nowhere near any of these guitar legends. he just todays games to get fame -
yes there r many better guitar players then slash but he puts so much feeling into his solos he should of at least made the list plus kurt at 12=outrageous
-
-
where the hell is slash and buckethead? especially slash.. this list is ridiculous
-
its not a list without slash on it... and seriously, i like nirvana and everything but kirk cobain is numnber 12?? i think hes gettin a little too much respect... and number one all time is eric clapton and there is no argument
-
no way eric clapton should be number one. mibi 2 or 3 but jimmi was better
-
i dont believe it was based off of guitar talent (as in who could play the best and hardest things) but who was the best writer and that is why hes up there but i do agree he should be on the list but i lil lower
-
-
No Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Ed King, Gary Rossington, or Paul Kossoff? Kurt Cobain 12th? Someone in this for hype? Man, I'm a better guitarist than kurt cobain.... The fact that Robert Johnson is even included is amazing to me. He's so great it would seem like they'd HAVE to leave him out.
-
This is obviously a list of pop guitarists :P As Mclaughlin is way back in the 40's. Rolling Stone probably couldn't keep a 9/8 beat and had no clue what he was doing...
Also greats like Metheny are not to be found. I mean it's painful to see Jack White and Johnny Ramone in the top 20. Sure they had influential music, but if this is best GUITARIST they shouldn't even be on the list. It's as if Rolling Stone got any pop album they could and took the guitarist from it and then they add Robert Johnson at 5th - awkwardly - to have their readers believe that they are respecting the blues roots. He is a legend, but not the 5th greatest guitarist...Oh I forgot about Kurt at number 12.... -
wtf this list is so gay, Eddie Van Halen at 70 whoever made this list is a retard, he should be 2 right behind Clapton!!!!
-
Too bad he's not still alive he'd still be on that thing like BBKing. He played lefthanded remember? So what do you think? I think he started all of that Rockn Roll crazy Guitar playin' You hear today. This world was made for all people. God bless America!
-
good job rolling stone.... NAAT this is stuff like no slash? eddie at 70? gilmour 82? RAndy? like are you frickers off your rocker whoever made this list clearly has no idea what they are talking about. and did we forget about the shredders? Johnson Satch vai? like im not even a fan but those guys can play.
-
cobain and morello suck. petruchi should be on hear. dave mustaine, i mean he started a new musical style. marty fredman
roads. eddy is to high up their. and chris broderich. people often forget him becaus sadly he is little known but he could play circles around almost everyone on that list. and hendrix was revolutionary but he wasnt increadible. he was actually a pretty poor guitarist. not worth of the number one spot. and what about dime bag and slash. this is just a stuffy mainstream list made by people who know nothing about guitar
-
-
ROLLING STONE IT'S TIME TO ADMIT YOU SUCK BALLS. I was better than Kurt Cobain when I was a fetus.
-
it doesnt matter how good he played it was just how he played the guitar and his style of playing
-
-
If any one has heared of Roy Buchanan you know he rates far higher than 57, I,m not going to knock anyone elses judgement but look him up for your selves. I agree about Slash but I would,nt drop any of the others, none should be judged by a mere mortal.
-
jack white in the top twenty? and eddie van halen at 70? have you never seen him play eruption? and there is no finger picking acoustic guitarists like adrian legg. stevie vai and joe satriani should be in the top ten no doubt with jimmy page on top.
-
jack white should not be in the top 20 eddie should and mark knopfler (27) is a finger picking guitarist but most of the time not on acoustic but i totally agree
-
-
Man they left out buckethead yngwie malmsteen eric johnson joe satriani......
-
jimi hendrix sucks at guitar, why is he on the list?
-
shut the f*** up, you have no idea what your talkin about, jimi hendrix is the best guitarist of all time, i agree with that part of the list. think about it, he may not of been much better than many of these guitarist but back then, he was way ahead of his time.
-
I really hope you were kidding, if not, you're a dumbass. Assuming you're serious, you're very ignorant and unappreciative of the roots and innovators of your music. Hendrix was WAY ahead of his time. Without him, music would sound nothing like it sounds today.
-
Blasphemy! You do not need to know every technical thing on the guitar to be great! Jimi made and thought of sounds no one themselves would think of. His music sent us to worlds unimaginable. You, sir, know nothing of true music.
-
i agree with you. i think townsend was abetter guitarist and so was page and iomi. who were odley enough coming out the same time as jimi. funny guys he started a new type of guitar. yeah and everyone changed and released albums like his within those years. bull fricking stuff. it was a musical revolution of all guitarists. you cant credid one stupid nigger. and honestly richards and townsend came out first. hmmmmm thats odd. you fricking idiots
-
Don't know about 'sux' but he's not number one by a long shot... but don't sweat it = his staunch defenders dropped a bit too much acid back when.
-
-
joni mitchell should be higher
-
joni mitchell should be higher
-
joni mitchell should be higher
-
Even the idea of a list like this is retarded. Hendrix at one is the only thing they got right. Beyond that, it's all a question of taste. This is so retarded I don't even know why I'm bothering to type.
-
Where are the clssical players? Where are the Africans (apart from 6 Ali Farka Touré). Where are the South Americans? Where are the jazz players? Maybe this list should be called the greatest one hundred guitarists that appeal to musically illiterate and ignorant westerners that think that Eddie van Halen is a musician because he can jerk his wrist up and down very quickly?
-
rolling stone has been in the music industry for decades. i think they would know who the best guitarists are over a bunch of 20 year olds who have nothing better to do then listen to their heavy metal shredding music and think "wow! hes really good!". jimi hendrix is at the top, and will probly be there for a long time. eddie van halen just did double tapping and techniques like that. listen to eruption live, it's nothing special. and as for slash, he's deffinently not one of the greatest guitarists ever. i mean, he's good, but there are tons of people who are more skilled then him.
-
This is great....I'm amazed at the wisdom of putting brother Duane so high up..where he should be! I like him best, but can understand Hendrix as 1, given his innovations.
Would put Santana in top 10.
Thanks!-
Shut the frick up, you obviously work for rolling stone.
-
-
You are a bunch of cs (Rolling stone) cobain is good but 12??? WHAT THE frickIS the edge DOING THERE ABOVE HALEN? WHERES DIME? frick YOU! YOU DONT KNOW MUSIC! THE STONE HAS BEEN ROLLING FOR TO LONG. frick YOU.
-
I did not write "frick" these bastards changed my opinion. Its time to... RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE! wrrrRRRAAAAAAAGGGHHHHH!!!
-
I agree with most people here- Jimmy Page # 1, Wes Montgomery #2,Jimmi #3, Eric Clapton #4, David Gilmour #5, SRV #6, Jerry Garcia #7, Ed Van Halen #8, Mark Knopfler #9,Warren Haynes #10 ,I would also put Slash very he plays a very clean acoustic too. Rolling Stone should be ashamed of self. Ok, Kirk Cobaine # 12 on list of Rock frontmen of all time but guitar, no
-
82 David Gilmour of Pink Floyd? Thats quite disrespectful. Rolling stone are very ignorent it seems.
-
I agree with the guy who mentioned allen collins. I think rolling stone are too big-headed for their own good. It's almost as if they have intentionaly taken the duty of making bullstuff lists upon themselves! They are very bias. This list is just some rich dudes opinion who thinks he knows everything. Bullstuff really.
-
What Eddie at #70 give me a break. And Cobain is nowhere near the top 100 of all time. How about Alex Lifeson of Rush or Lindsey Buckingham or Bilyl Gibbons or Joe Satriani. Jack Black, Johnny Ramone and Cobain you people are on crack.

1. Jimmy Page
2. Randy Rhoads
somewhere high up there in no particular order, Robert Fripp, Jimi Hendrix, Brian May, Robert Johnson, Keith Richards, Jack White, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Stevie Ray Vaughan
