1985 : Dire Straits Tops the Charts

“Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits becomes the No. 1 song on the Billboard charts. Songwriter and band member Mark Knopfler wrote the song after he heard a worker at an electronics store making fun of MTV. He scribbled down the man’s monologue and turned it into song lyrics. The song featured backup vocals by Sting singing “I want my MTV” to the tune of “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” by the Police.
