Ridley said, "I've shot with Russell for the past five weeks. That's why he's so sturdy-looking at the moment. He's losing weight. He was 30 pounds overweight to do the part."

  • Russell Crowe told James Lipton during an interview that it had been a mistake for him to decide to gain wight for his role in "The Insider" because his metabolism has never been the same since then (more prone to weight gain). He also named about 15 outgoing physical problems and scars from injuries during the making of the "Gladiator". The public doesn't often hear details like this. It was appreciated. He is like most of us--we overestimate our ability to recover from things and underestimate our vulnerability.

I respect Russell's dedication to his work & honesty. I was surprised to perceive his demeanor as shy and nervous. His openness and directness was refreshing but it also seemed to make him feel "exposed" also. Interesting as compared to an interview with Cate Blanchett who seemed to be totally open/honest and very much at ease.
