See More... Variety reports that Brad Pitt left the set of “State of Play” last Wednesday due to a writing conflict with Universal Pictures. Universal is now trying to get Russell Crowe to sign on for the role before production gets delayed any longer, possibly missing its 2008 release.

Universal claimed Pitt left a pay-or-play commitment and left open the option of suing him; Pitt’s camp claimed he was essentially forced out of a movie he’s been eager to topline for almost two years just because the studio wouldn’t wait for a strike resolution and a rewrite to bring the script back to a place that made him comfortable.

Pitt has joined other actors who are making a stand on the part of the writers. The writer’s strike has left Hollywood in turmoil but a resolution might not come soon enough for some big studio names and films. The long-term impact is already being felt by larger film companies and it is only a matter of time before Hollywood comes to a stand still.
