IS Mel Brooks getting ready to hang up his rubber chicken? The 81-year-old comic will be in Las Vegas over New Year’s to scout the aters for the first road production of his Broadway musical “Young Frankenstein,” says a source. But after that, as he’s been telling pals, his plate will be project-free. “Mel’s thrilled with his newfound success of recent years,” adds the insider. “But at this point, he feels directing another film or mounting another stage musical would just be a pain in the a - -.” The only gig that might conceivably tempt him back into the spotlight is the one-man show on Broadway he’s been mulling - although, “Unlike Billy Crystal, Mel would run his no more than a week or two.”
