"They were hanging out. Emma has had a boyfriend [rugby player Tom Duckworth] for years," a friend tells PEOPLE, pouring cold water on any romance talk.
Watson, 17, and Borrell, 27, first hung out Monday at the Burberry/Vanity Fair portrait exhibition at London's National Portrait Gallery, where Borrell pointed out photographs of DH Lawrence (which he later told PEOPLE was his favorite) and Aldous Huxley to an adoring looking Watson.
"She was probably just a bit star struck," says the friend of the adoring looks. "She's usually chaperoned to these kinds of events by her father."
The pair – who were also joined by a female friend of Watson's – then headed on to a party across town for London fashion label PPQ. Borrell and Watson left the PPQ bash separately – the rocker with another girl.
