Did David Archuleta just cover Eva Cassidy’s version of Imagine?

Did David Archuleta really interpret Imagine to make it his own or did he just cover a rendition performed by Eva Cassidy? This discussion is taking place on a lot of message boards now and I was curious about your feedback. The judges praised him for making the song his own thinking he took Lennon’s original and put together his own style for the show, but obviously he was basing his performance wasn’t based on the original.

  • More like he was inspired by her rendition but from there on his own soulful take comes through.
    Also, watch his video of "Angels" from a couple of years back. The sound is bad and a lot is drowned out by the girls screaming but his singing on the chorus is heartfelt and he adds his own little vocal riffs that enhance. With "Imagine" there is an emotional dimension to his delivery that is not there in the original, (not to slight the great John Lennon).You can hear the Eva C influence, but her version is more cooly styled, whereas David's digs deeper at the heart. I think this boy will develop his own style and we should expect some great work in the future.
