The 29-year-old Aussie singer was sent home last night after performing Aerosmith's "Dream On."
Judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson said the tune didn't suit him.
When his elimination was announced, Johns tried to crack a smile, but his family was clearly upset.
Crying, his mother buried her hands in her face, an on-looker tells Usmagazine.com. His dad patted him on the back.
When host Ryan Seacrest asked him if he was OK, Johns nodded his head.
Johns' ousting came as a shock since he never landed in the bottom three on the show and no contestants were given the boot after last year's Idol Gives Back special. (Ratings for this charity special dropped significantly, from 26.9 million viewers to 17.5 million.)
Carly Smithson and Syesha Mercado — who've maintained spots in the bottom three throughout the season — were once again the other lowest vote-getters. (See what the Idol contestants looked like as kids here.)
When Smithson's name was announced, fans screamed, "Carly, you rock!" an Idol attendee tells Us. Contestant David Cook gave her a hug.
The show now has seven finalists.
