American Idol's Brooke White Forgets Lyrics

I Like It I Don't Like It
The show must go on!

Brooke White did the unthinkable on last night's American Idol — stopped her song, and started again.

"I'm sorry," she said, gesturing for the band to restart Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita ballad, "You Must Love Me."

After performing, a nearly speechless Paula Abdul sputtered: "You must never start and stop!"

Judge Simon Cowell, though, admitted he, "would have done exactly what she did if [he'd] forgotten the words.

"It was a very brave thing to do," he added, but still called her performance, "quite uncomfortable."

White, 24, told Ryan Seacrest, "I lost the lyric. It's never happened to me before on this show."

But the Arizona native has also stopped and started on the piano one other time this season.

Tells Us: Will Brooke be voted off after her mistake?

  • I voted for Brooke all along. These kids are under an immense amount of stress and I love her more for what she did. It has never happened but as they say, that's live television. She does not deserve to be voted off for being so vulnerable and human.

  • It doesn't matter if you forget the lyrics, American Idol makes way too big of a deal with the whole "don't ever forget the lyrics," simply because I've seen it happen numerous times amongst the greatest bands to ever live and it's more how you play it off than anything. Paula doesn't know what she's talking about, of course Paula can't start a song again because everything she's ever peformed runs tape in the background. Brooke was no more than 5 seconds into the song and the most natural thing to do would've been stop the damn song and get it right the second time, which she ulimately did.

  • Brooke did the same thing any professional would have. Paula may use lip synching and have computers fix her mistakes afterward but REAL singers do sometimes have to have another go at a song. It isn't that uncommon to see it happen with a live band.

I loved Simon's response to Abdul, "Well she can't just make the song up, Paula!"
