I Like It I Don't Like It
Geri has become a children’s author and today reveals how she has based her quirky new characters on her own days as a schoolgirl. Geri’s infectious enthusiasm is currently focused on the project she has been working on in her upstairs office for the past four years.
On Friday she publishes her first children’s book, Ugenia Lavender – one of a planned series of six tles aimed at the over-sevens.
She is, it is fair to say, very excited about the project.
“I know there is prejudice against celebrity authors but if you read my stories you’ll know they’re not ghost written — only I could be that bonkers!” she says, self-mockingly.
Her cartoon heroine, Ugenia, is clearly a mini Geri, with a swinging bob of clipped ginger hair, a smattering of freckles and a confident, mischievous smile.
So what about more children?
Geri says: “At some point. I feel very complete though. Happy and privileged. Some people don’t even get the opportunity. I feel like Bluebell has given me purpose. I’m humbled by her. She teaches me many spiritual lessons about patience and understanding and helps me find the beauty in the world.
“Today at 2am she woke up with a nightmare and I got a book out which we looked at together. It was a privilege to sit with my daughter and do that.”
Geri says motherhood and her decision to become an author have pushed her in new directions.
And while there are no signs of her new man — rumoured to be Spice Girls dancer Ivan “Flipz” Velez — she seems happier and more content than the frail Geri we once used to glimpse through grainy paparazzi pictures. With a frankness that might have come straight from a motivational book, she admits: “What I am learning is to step out of my comfort zone and the things that I ‘should’ be.
“I’ve got one life and I want it to be fun, and I want it to be free, and to be the best that I can with love, and to give it to other people too. That’s it . . . that’s all we can do. We can try. We can try, right?” source
