M.I.A., whose real name is Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, has plenty of material to sing about. Growing up in her parents' native Sri Lanka, the vocalist witnessed civil war and ended up returning to England as a refugee.
These days, M.I.A. is an international superstar with her dancehall style of music. In addition to two hit records, she's also an acclaimed visual artist. And while all of her work has achieved mass appeal (she's toured with Gwen Stefani and DJed fashion shows for people like Marc Jacobs), it's still unabashedly political.
