The eagerly awaited summer release of Sex and the City: The Movie will not open in Manhattan, or even Brooklyn – but across the Atlantic, in London, on May 12, reports New York's Daily News.
New York will not get a look at the picture until two weeks later.
The move seems odd, given that when Sex and the City was an HBO series, it did a lot to boost tourism in New York – where there is even a popular guided tour of sites from the show where Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Chris Noth all romped in character.
So why, four years after the series ended, is New York getting the cold shoulder?
Playing down the snub, a spokesman for Sex's studio, New Line, tells the News about the British launch, "London will be much smaller. The whole cast isn't even going."
Mr. Big Stays PutThe four leading actresses will make the journey, but Noth, who plays Mr. Big, and Jennifer Hudson, whose role is that of assistant to Carrie Bradshaw (Parker), will not attend the Leicester Square premiere.
"It was simply a question of logistics and scheduling," explained the studio rep. "We're still planning the big premiere to be in New York."
That will be May 27, at the landmark Radio City Music Hall, followed by a reception at the Museum of Modern Art. The evening will benefit Caroline Kennedy's Fund for Public Schools.
Fair enough, but it may be worth noting that London is increasingly becoming the launching pad for geographically inappropriate movies. Only last week, Ashton Kutcher was in the city's West End for the world premiere of his and Cameron Diaz's What Happens in Vegas. Go figure.
