1972 : The Godfather Opens

Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather opens on this day in 1972. The film swept the Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Actor (for Marlon Brando), and Best Screenplay (Coppola and Mario Puzo, author of the best-selling novel). Its sequel, The Godfather, Part II, was released in 1974 and won six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
