Official word from Edwards is expected Wednesday at a rally in Grand Rapids, Mich., where the two men to appear together.
Speaking to PEOPLE earlier this month, Edwards's wife, Elizabeth Edwards, said she liked Hillary Clinton's plan for universal health insurance, while Edwards said the he doesn't much care for Clinton's "old politics."
Edward's endorsement of Obama follows Clinton's defeat of Obama by 41 points in the West Virginia primary on Tuesday.
Edwards, formerly a senator from North Carolina, ended his campaign for president on Jan. 30, as momentum for both Clinton and Obama was still building. Reportedly, the Clinton camp had been wooing Edwards for his approval.
