But this is not indeed the response of SJP - in fact, she feels deceived. Apparently, Theyskens had led her to believe that it had not before been worn by a celebrity... which, lets not give Santo Domingo undeserved recognition here, it wasn't.
“In the big picture, this is not important. But there is a relationship between the entertainment industry and fashion,” SJP explains of the unwritten code between stars and their designers. “Look, my affection for the dress hasn’t changed,” she says, “but what they did was so short-sighted. It’s just unethical and disappointing that they would allow the dress to be worn again. I just wish it had been handled differently and they had been straight about it.”
'Unethical and disappointing'? Those are strong words for someone who just admitted the issue 'is not important' in the big picture.
If 'recycling' was such an issue, how did SJP's entourage manage such an oversight? To me, it is conceivable that Theyskens would not consider Santo Domingo a celebrity, but it is inconceivable that SJP, her stylist, etc., pretending to be so interested in fashion to actually care about a matter such as this, would not have seen the dress on Santo Domingo on style.com.
As one comment on the NY Times blogroll pointed out:
Who is SJP to be so out of touch with the fashion world, to not know what dress Theysken officially sponsored for the Met ball? All her years of front row shows, free clothes, the endorsement deals, a clothing line at Steve & Barry’s, a perfurme collection at Saks, a platform that she has used to catipult her self, her career, SATC as a cultural icon, with herself as the very essence and embodiment of fashion today.
Furthermore, who cares if Santo Domingo wore the dress before SJP? First of all, she was not a celebrity (notice the 'was'; now, she has become famous as an image split next to SJP), or at least not outside of New York society circles. Second of all, even if she was a legitimite celebrity, does that mean that two celebrities can't wear the same dress? Is our generation so over-consuming that we expect designers to create couture creations to be one amongst '40 dresses' that a celebrity will choose from for a red carpet event? I think that is just unreasonable.
The dress was a beautiful dress and it should be worn by as many people as who share that opinion. The fact that the dress was photographed before did not in any way take away any photographs being taken of SJP, and did not take away from the dress itself. If anything, the dress and SJP have gotten more exposure just from making this 'newsworthy'.
I smell a conspiracy.
