Rose & That Director: Not Dunzo

OK, a change of pace: despite rumors, Rose McGowan and director Robert Rodriguez are still engaged, and still working on various projects together.

The New York Post reported earlier this week that Rose and Robert split because of problems with the couple’s production of a “Barbarella” remake. Rose desperately wanted the lead role in the film, which Robert was directing, but studio heads preferred Jessica Alba because they didn’t think Rose could command a huge audience.

McGowan, best known for her witchy role on TV’s “Charmed,” wasn’t thought to have enough box-office draw for the $70 million remake, especially after “Grindhouse” disappointed with about $25.4 million in domestic ticket sales.

“Too bad ‘Grindhouse’ didn’t gross $100 million. Then, maybe, ‘Barbarella’ would have gotten the green light,” said one source. “Instead, the moguls were saying, ‘We need a bigger star, a bigger name.’ “

Rose’s rep denied the report, saying the couple are fine and still engaged. In addition to planning a wedding, the rep claimed Rose is still on track to star in “Barbarella,” as well as two other remakes Robert is planning: “Red Sonja” and “Women in Chains.”

“The production of all three films is moving forward with Rose to star,” the rep told People.

As for claims that the couple have called off their engagement, a source close to McGowan says, “She and Robert are fine.”

Rose and Robert hooked up during production of “Grindhouse” in April 2006, while Robert was still married to his wife of sixteen years.
