Mariah Carey 'Rescued' by Nick Cannon

"The Insider" has the latest...

Soul diva Mariah Carey tells Elle Magazine she is currently in a very good place -- enjoying continued success in her career and loving life with her new husband, actor-rapper Nick Cannon.

In the Elle interview, set to hit newsstands July 15th, Carey says her new hubby actually rescued her from darker times. "When I was in an unhappy place in my life, Carey says of her past, "I always wanted to be kidnapped. I just wanted a way out, but I didn't have one." "He (Nick) sort of kidnapped me and took me on a helicopter ride. Then he re-proposed."

The Grammy-winning singer told Elle that Nick is someone, like her, who is "motivated by faith." "We really do share a similar spiritual outlook on life…. Even though people have their own fears about 'Was I in a relationship before this, was I not in a relationship before this,' to me, I wasn't in a real relationship; it was more of a friendship and a working situation."

She reveals that kids be in her future with Nick, but she stressed the importance that children would be brought up in "reality" despite her celebrity status. She said she has no doubt that Nick could help make that happen. "I couldn't imagine anybody that I've ever met being a better dad."

On politics, Carey said she identifies well with Barack Obama as a presidential candidate, in part because of her mixed racial heritage. "I can relate a lot to so many of the stories he tells. Clearly I am not the political analyst of the ages, but this is something that hits me on a deeper level than anything I've ever experienced growing up."

She said she would be honored to help out with Obama's campaign if he requested, but for now is just "kind of watching from the sidelines."

Carey is not showing signs of slowing down professionally and has stayed busy with the release of her latest hit album, E=MC², as well as appearing in two movies, 'Tennessee' and 'You Don't Mess With the Zohan.'

She concedes that at this point in her life, many elements have come together to make her a happier person. "They've been calling me Cinderella since I first started out, so, of course, being Cinderella..." she says, laughing, "Most people would think, Okay, please! This doesn't happen in real life."
