Elisabeth Hasselbeck, The View Panel Debate Use of N-Word

Rosie O'Donnell may be off The View. But she didn't take all the show's controversy with it.

On this morning's episode, Elizabeth Hasselbeck broke down in tears during a discussion about under what circumstances the "N" word can be used appropriately. Take a look at the heated debate now

Whoopi Goldberg, an African-American, said: "We use it the [word the way] we want to use it," but Hasselbeck was soon brought to tears, asking:

"How are we supposed to move forward if we keep using words that bring back that pain?"

It's a sensitive topic. React to the video and to the issue now.

  • I feel for Elizabeth. There is a double standard and a desire to make white america pay. I am sick of listening to this garbage. This is why a Black President will not work.

  • If I were Elizabeth I would not regard Ms Goldberg as any authority upon the use of the N word. I am someone of colour and I totally hate the use of that word . It equally pains me to have to say, that a few Dreds does not a black person make. I have longed considered that Ms Goldberg has a few identity issues of her own to work through, hence her unsurprising, ill informed and unintelligent response.

  • not a hasselbeck fan..but she's right.. i'm sick and tired of white/other race America always having to be on the defensive.. I don't care to know what it's like to be BLACK IN AMERICA(CNN special report airing soon)!!

  • I am not a fan of Elizabeth. But I totally agree with her, it should not be said by anyone. Blacks have a double standard they are allowed to use the words as if it's a right of passage to do so, but let a white person say the word and all hell break loose. Shame on Whoopi and the other dumb ass black chick, she is more annoying than Elizabeth. And I am a black woman.

  • Blacks can use the "N" word and whites can not use the "N" word !
Its things like this that will keep racist and racism alive forever !
There can never be a "EQUAL" when there are words only certain people can use !
Am I a racist ? HELL YES....as long as I keep getting called one and as long as the "N"-Americans use hyphens and feel they are better then I am, Woopie....I think your a great actor but on this you are wrong

  • It's the old lesson we have learned from our parents, "if you have nothing nice to say don't say it". Iam not a fan of Elizabeth's and felt she should have been let out of her contract a long time ago, but getting back to her question what should I tell Grace about the "N" word? Honey you just don't use it, it could be a word that can hurt someone's feeling so just don't use it. That she can ask why it's proper for a black person to use but not appropriate for a white person is just plain ignorant on her her part.

  • Though he has apologized, over and over again, Jesse Jackson, of all people is suppose to be above this sort of thing and his actions are simply unacceptable. Neither are the comments by Whoopi and Sheri on The View relative to the n-word are reflective of the Black community as a whole. Not all African Americans share their acceptable use of this word.

  • "[You're]…so full of hate you want to go out and fight everybody! Because you've been whipped and chased by hounds. Well that might not be living, but it sure as hell ain't dying. And dying's been what these white boys have been doing for going on three years now! Dying by the thousands! Dying for *you*, fool! I know, 'cause I dug the graves. And all this time I keep askin' myself, when, O Lord, when it's gonna be our time? Gonna come a time when we all gonna hafta ante up. Ante up and kick in like men. LIKE MEN! You watch who you call a n*****! If there's any n*****s around here, it's YOU. Just a smart-mouthed, stupid-a**, swamp-runnin' n*****! And if you not careful, that's all you ever gonna be!" - "Rawlins" Glory (1989)
    EXACTLY RIGHT!
The truth is that there are few cultures in the world today which have not, at one time or another, been slaves to another culture. The English, Irish and Scotts were commonly taken as slaves from their own lands by the invading Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries. The very word slave comes from a reference to the slavik region (eastern and central Europe) whose people were taken as slaves by the Vikings and Romans.
When the slave trade in the United States was at its height, the slave ships off the coast of Africa didn't have to take huge expeditions inland to find their bounty. Warring tribes in Africa were eager to deliver their enemies into the hands of the slave traders for trinkets and trade goods. The Egyptians kept not only the entire Hebrew nation as slaves, but people from many of their neighboring African countries as well. Where's the inward-directed rage for the African continent's role in their own slave trade? Most middle and far eastern and African countries either practiced or were forced into slavery by their peers throughout history. Many of them still do!
So…since my ancestors ultimately come from Great Britain (who were the slaves of the Vikings), I'll be staging a protest in front of the US Norwiegian, Swedish, and Finnish embassies to finally get compensation and retribution for centuries of my people being held as slaves by the Vikings. Other people just wouldn't understand what a blight my peoples' oppression is on history and what a profound impact it has on my life today.
One might accuse me of over-simplifying or belittling the role colonial Americans played in the slave trade saying, "You're going to compare our plight to one that happened a thousand years ago or more?!?" Well…why not? I mean, where is that line that a culture's history as slaves becomes irrelevant? Eight hundred years from now, will we finally stop hearing about living White Americans' culpability in slavery? To my knowledge, I've never owned a slave…my father never owned a slave…or his father before him. In fact, my ancestors emigrated after the slave trade was long over. Lets assume for a moment that Black America truly IS justified in condemning the current descendants of slave-owners for the actions of their forefathers…why is it that ALL white people are lumped together with them? Its quite likely that many of the people who they are condemning have ancestors who fought and gave their lives to help abolish slavery (which DID happen…regardless of what "current" history books claim the Civil War was about). Talk about your blind, random and indiscriminate bigotry! You want a more recent example of white slavery? How about today? http://www.hrw.org/reports/2001/prison/report4.html#_1_27
So…what's the difference? Well, for one, the cultures throughout history who've overcome slavery, wisely liberated themselves and then moved on. The English liberated themselves and went on changing the world. The Hebrews left Egypt behind them and didn't look back. North Africa liberated themselves from a weakening Egyptian empire and went about building their own. They aspired to become something better than they were and worked together to become so; and not by holding their former captors responsible for their every failing. History doesn't record any affirmative action, compensation funds, preferential treatment or civil liberties unions previously needed to help a culture recover from the affects of slavery. Determination, ambition, wits and hard work are much better mortar to build a future with than self-pity, resentment, hostility and a self destructive sense of entitlement.
Teddy Roosevelt said, "There is no place in this country for hyphenated Americans." As long as black culture thinks its okay to believe they live in a different world....they will. Its called "self fulfilling prophecy"...Psychology 101.

    • I don't have time to respond to every point in this post (I have a job and a life). I am going to address a few obviously erroneous points that most white people (I'm white) make when discussing this issue. (1) I cannot speak for the black community, but I think the big issue is not the slavery of 150 years ago, but the segregation of 40 years ago. It was only a generation ago that the "n" word was used (alnong with lynching and terrorism) to keep a large segment of our population living subserviently in fear. To assume that all of those associations with that word are going to go away with a past that recent is naive at best, ignorant and hateful at worst. (2) every other "enslaved" culture you mentioned was enslaved many more than 200 years ago and I would guess that there was quite a bit of ill will harbored for many years after the enslavement ended. It is just not discussed in history books. Gotta get back to work now.

  • Black people who defended the "N" word show a lack of understanding of the racist meaning of the word. I don't know of any other group of people who were oppressed and then turn around and use the very oppressive word the oppressor used to dehumanized them as a term of endearment. For those who say it is a term of endearment, you need to find other words to express such. Just as you wouldn't call a black man, "boy", the "N" word is as offensive.

  • my mom escaped the german ovens after generations of family residence on german soil(they escaped ovens! who even think in terms of voting rights, whoopie) - we were perfectly OK never calling each other (endearment? give me a brake- a derogatory)nazzi profanities. you should try it out, it may help heal the afro-american collective. BTW- true afro-american scholars claim the same.

Whoopie,,,,, Shut up for a day we live in the same world. You don't have it bad. Drive you car to the center of D town and leave the keys in it for ten minutes and let's see how we feel about or brothers then

  • I AGREE,FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME, WITH ELIZABETH. IT IS APPALLING THAT WHOOPIE GOLDBERG WOULD ADVOCATE USE OF "THAT WORD" UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. AND WHY DOES SHERRI SHEPHERD THINK SHE IS WORLDLY ENOUGH TO SAY TO A JOURNALIST OF BARBRA WALTERS EXPERIENCE THAT "I DONT WANT TO HEAR THAT OUT OF YOUR MOUTH" SHAME ON THEM BOTH. THEY SHOULD RIDE A NYC SUBWAY, THEY WOULD BE SO PROUD OF THE BLACK YOUTHS USE THAT WORD!

  • Elizabeth is right, how is it that African-American's can use the word all they want, but if a White American says it, they're automatically making a racist remark. White Americans don't claim that when honky or cracker is used,

  • I am a moderate. I have never voted for Bush. After yesterday's show I will never vote for Obama. "We", the black population have a chip on their shoulders. Whoopi, my mother as a white woman had to endear many hardships that we don't "blame" the country for. She also was not allowed to vote, to go to college, etc. I myself was told by my family that they would not pay for me to go to college because I would just marry & have children which by context means motherhood is demeaning.

I am enraged that you as a "black" & a "woman" which the American people have supported enough to make you a multimillionaire is bashing this "white" America. Where have you been living??? Maybe in Beverly Hills or Malibu. This America I live in is far from "White". I feel you need to grow up, this is not the 60's. I am insulted that you still bring up the Black Card. That is why blacks are still "BLACKS".

  • I know one thing about the N word and that it came from bad people who called people of color that name, so they could demean and torture black people. It is a bad word and if Whoopie and others want to use it then it will forever be. Do not blame Barack for words from a panel who love a scandal and pick stupid topics. Barack will be president and the world will be a better place.

  • White dumb presidents don't work either. There is a double standard in America, why can't you get over it. Whites did a bad thing that they still benefit from today. So why do I have to please the whiteman by not saying a word because it reminds him of the truely bad past their ancestor did. We will never let whitey forget. Your blood still flows with the evil blood of your ancestors. My blood still flows with slave blood. I would just like tell whites that they can say the word all they want just expect to get your but kicked if you say it around a blackman. You don’t see me telling white people that they can’t join the KKK. It still exsist in this country. Why isn’t whitey crying over the fact that there are still KKK members in America. Just check the net. You will see it all. I will never stop reminding whitey of the fact that they changed my skin, my blood and my history. Niga, niga, niga, get over it whitey. Enstead of trying to stop me from saying NIGa, why do you help us find jobs, get education, win the war on drugs, win the war on poverty, Oh that’s right you love war , you love dropping thousand pounds on babies, and still believe out of 4000 flights daily 4 flights slipped away and distroyed 4 building s the same way, and even believe that Dick Cheney is allow to play war games in a real world situation. The white man is the biggest hypocrite there is.

  • Sticks and stones... Words can never hurt me.
I do not believe for one second that use of the N word really does any damage to anyone.
What I do think hurts is a white / black arguement with the black side saying it is OK for them to use at each other but a white person should never use such demeaning language.
With Jessie Jackson using such language, now it is acceptable for blacks to use because Jessie is the never had a job loafer who has stollen millions from well meaning blacks to furnish his lifestyle. He is as useless as Al Sharpton, men who keep a racial divide alive.
In this country a person is a person. As the Army is now saying, the only color that maters are red, white and blue.
Get over it. Everyone is hurting now.
Move on and ignore racial dividing celebrities who have too much.
Pay attention to the people on the street.
They don't care what you call them as long as they can eat.
I am over 50 and white, and I am personally offended when I hear any hurtful language. No one has the right to hurt others, even if they are the same color.
    Takes one to know one!

  • I am not trying to be abusive but when I here the type of excuse the Whoppie takes about with the "N" word I then know and can understand why blacks will NEVER be in a place of control. They will never allow themselves to get out of the gutter because they just can't let go. Deep down they are all full of hatred. They need to realize that the people that caused all of that pain many years ago are all gone. Let it go, let it go, let it go already.

I have alot of white and black friends but i respect that some of my white freinds did not grow up the same way i was. alot of my college friends mom and dads had money but thought cause i was black mine did not but once explained to them about my family they understood me.
