The Four 'Idol' Judges Talk to 'The Insider'!

For the first time ever today, all four "American Idol" judges were in New York City getting ready to winnow out the contestants who would make it to Hollywood -- and ET was there to get their reaction to their latest addition!

"It is about time. Never in a lifetime did I think a friend would [join the judging panel]," Paula Abdul, who co-wrote a song for Kylie Minogue with new judge Kara DioGuardi, tells ET.

On Monday, "Idol" announced that the Grammy-nominated songwriter would be joining the search for the next singing sensation. Kara has worked with artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, the Jonas Brothers, David Cook, Britney Spears and Celine Dion, so she knows her music.

"I am either going to be a fabulous dinner guest or a diaster that is ushered out before the second course," Kara says.

Continuing with the dinner metaphor, Simon Cowell tells ET, "It is like having dinner with three people and then someone joins us who we don't know and no one gets on."

It is too soon to tell how the dynamics will shake out on "American Idol" with a fourth judge, but Ryan Seacrest has only good things to say about Kara.

"I met her yesterday for the first time and she is really great," he says. "She has no idea what she is in store for, which is the best part about it."

As for her judging style, Ryan adds, "She's really candid. I think coming from a woman on the show that might be great."

"American Idol" will return for its new season in January 2009 on FOX.

  • I would like to see them give the decision making on who advances to the finals and who wins the idol contest back to the judges. They need to replace Paula and Randy, they are saps.

  • NONONONONONO!! How long is the show going to be?? Randy and Paul already go on and on. I LOVE American Idol - don't get me wrong - but we don't need anyone else saying anything. We all know that Simon is the only one that truly knows what he's talking about and he can do it in just a few words!!! GO SIMON!!!

  • I don't think that we need another judge, its not fair, the show is going to be very boring now, we don't need another judge, i love the three judges only, why are they changing it? i think its a dumb idea

  • How is this going to work? Three judges keeps ties from happening in the auditions and after that..They can't let America vote during those times so this isn't going to work at all.

  • it's about time; idol got serious. Simon is the only one who has a legitimate opinion Paula and Randy are the two clowns of the show, Their opinions are slanted,Randy make s statement with Paula agreeing on just about every syllable. Makes you wonder if she actually has a mind of her own.

  • who the hell watches american idol anymore? it is one of the worst shows . it started the whole run of reality shows that tv is flooded by now. THANK GOD THE WRITER STRIKE ENDED otherwise we wouldnt have 10 new reality shows every month on network tv. a crappy addition to an already horrible show.

  • Out on the west coast, all the buzz is about Kara DioGuardi, the new judge to be joining the crew. Now Paula won't be so alone, and the staff will be more balanced (and arguably stable).

    But will Kara be as popular? the producers seem to think so. we'll be soon seeing and hearing the cue cards that Kara is being given to read that presumeably will improve ratings of the entire show.

    It's a dim, dark view of AI, and for that matter, all of idolchatter, idolexpose, and show business.

    Looking at my next cue card, I see that it is time to rap up this discussion, and move onto other production notes of my day. Good luck finding and reading yours while keeping them in the correct order. That's what interns are for! (hint hint)
