Actress Sandra Bullock and her husband, Jesse James, were hit by a drunk driver last night while riding in a private car in Gloucester, Mass., a source has learned.

Bullock, who is filming The Proposal on Cape Ann, and James, of Monster Garage fame, were being driven home for the evening around 9:50 p.m. Friday when a gray Subaru station wagon jumped lanes on East Main Street and smashed into their front end, police said. No one was injured.

"They were shaken up, needless to say," said Gloucester Police Lt. Gerry Cook. "But they were fine – he was hugging her. Jess and Sandra were hugging. They said they were fine, they didn’t need medical attention. There were quite a few people snapping pictures of them." The two walked away from the accident and were not even examined, he said.

The driver of the Subaru, identified as Lucille P. Gatchell, 64, from Gloucester by local cops, was given a field sobriety test by officers responding to the scene. Gatchell blew a .20 on the breathalyzer – two and a half times the legal limit, Cook said.

She was arrested, taken to the station, and booked on driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to stay in marked lanes. She was released on her own recognizance and will be arraigned on the charges Tuesday.

Cook said Gatchell didn't know who she hit, until the arresting officer told her, as he drove her to the station. "And then she started laughing, she was really giddy," he said.

Reached by phone Saturday morning, Gatchell declined to comment, politely saying "no" to a Boston Herald reporter, whose paper originally reported the crash story.

"It's unfortunate," Cook told the Herald. "But it shows you that no one is immune from drunk drivers, no matter how famous you are."

  • Thank heavens an innocent couple weren't snuffed, very happy they weren't ridin' motocycle(s) or we'd be appalled & sickened by the tremendous tragedy that could have been PREVENTED! RTL~LTR! DRIVE SOBER & don't drive with a phone (up your a**) you're probably not paying attention & therefore can't feel it either! not to mention admitting to the world that you'd rather DIE than talk to your passenger(s), which only confirms YOU'RE so very popular (mostly your own mind) that you never would've known how important you really are 10-15 years ago when you only knew your neighbors & close family,if they didn't live nearby you only talked(ON THE PHONE) on special occasions (long distance calls on your phone bill were read carefully when the monthly statement (bill) was recieved & I know for a fact growing up ours was always higher & would get cut off frequently after my parents would get drunk (before the fighting would start), ironically it was generally a phone call that would start the argument that would ultimately lead to a fight! back in the day you could actually NOT talk 24/7, like noise ordinances & common courtesy there were certain times & PLACES FOR EVERYTHING, not EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL the TIME! I hope the other driver recieves the harshest punishment allowed,NO EXCUSES! the person driving the other vehicle already had their chance not to KILL or cripple, any request for lieniency of any kind should NOT even be considered! Sandra & Jesse rock-on! Love U both!

  • On the local news station in San Luis Obispo County it was reported there were serious injuries. I am releived to hear there are none.

Further proves, that on all issues, one should do research on their own and not listen to or believe only one source when adopting its beliefs.
