The Met Costume Gala is, beyond the fashion shows themselves, the fashion industry's biggest night. And it is surely a just as hectic for designers, vying for the ultimate celebrity ambassador.
There is more A-list star power present than at the Oscars, so much so that even A-list celebs like J-Lo have to walk the red carpoet designer-less and with their not-so-attractive husbands.
Those lucky enough to snag a designer date aren't just A-list in Hollywood, they are fashion elite. They are the ones that designers fight over for red carpet exposure, and go as far as providing inspiration - alas, Kate Bosworth or Diane Kruger.
The night's festivities were hosted by George, Julia and Giorgio, so, needless to say, all wore Armani. They all walked the red carpet together too. Probably much to the dismay of the Cruises, who have long been supporters of Armani - choosing to wear him for the Oscars annually and even for their wedding. I bet Tom wasn't so happy that he had to suffice with Roberta Armani and not the man himself. Poor Tom.
I am not really feeling the Armani looks either, especially on Katie. More on that later.
The next Italian to take the carpet was none other than the 'retired' Mr. V. Look at that tan! He must be enjoying his vacation. He was accompanied by Claudia Schiffer, who I must say, looked quite striking. I appreciated that he brought back a supermodel for his final Met ball. Supermodels are so Valentino.
I cannot believe that Tom Ford walked the carpet with that dress. The same man that told Posh not to buy his clothes while at Gucci.
Notice in the back of the Vali picture, how Francisco Costa (of Calvin Klein) is waiting patiently at the stairs while his celebrity date poses for the paps? Well, not all designers are so modest.
You can always count on King Karl to inject some of his egocentricity into any event. Apparently, when asked who his favourite superhero was (the night's theme), Karl, in true Karl form, simply replied 'me'! Love it.
Here he is posing with his date (how modest of him!) and also by himself. Don't think for a second he didn't coordinate the sequins ensembles.
Francisco Costa took a few pictures with his date, Liv Tyler, but left her soonafter to her own devices. She and Costa must be getting close - she has faithfully worn him to the majority of her latest red carpet appearances and sat front row at his latest show.
MARCHESA?! What were they thinking? Recycling gowns for two of fashion's biggest nights? You may notice that the gown worn by Georgina Chapman was sported by Sienna Miller at the last Oscars. It wasn't that nice the first time around! And her partner Karen Craig, on the other side of Dita Von Teese, is recycling the J-Lo Oscar dress! Did they think we wouldn't notice? Have they run out of fresh ideas?
I hope Mr. V steered clear of the D&G men, as his recent not-so-kind words were not well received by the pair. Italian bitch fights, got to love them. The duo had the privilege of escorting the recently engaged ScarJo, who looked oh-so-pretty.
I was not so impressed by my Kate or her designer date, Stella McCartney, for that matter. Pretty boring.
You may not recognise this woman with Olivier Theyskens (Antwerp alumni, now at Nina Ricci) but I can assure you she is well known in amongst the fashion crowd. Olivier personally designed a custom couture bridal gown for her extravegant South American Wedding. Maybe part of his fee covered her Met date.
Doesn't Ashley Olsen look different? Like healthy or something? Look at her compared to MK - and don't tell me you can't tell them apart anymore. She looks good. The DVF dresses are nothing special, but I'm sure Mr. Louboutin, inset, at least provided them some fab shoes to wear.
xx
