New York Investigates Anne Hathaway's Boyfriend
New York's Attorney General is investigating Rafaello Follieri's perpetually-shady business dealings.
Rafaello Follieri, boyfriend of Devil Wears Prada star Anne Hathaway, cannot seem to keep himself out of financial trouble. Last year, he was involved in what the Wall Street Journal called an ugly breakup of his economic alliance with billionaire Ron Burkle, with whom he had entered into what was supposed to be a philanthropic endeavor. Burkle sued Follieri for $55 million, claiming that money intended for a charitable foundation instead financed Follieri and Hathaway's extravagant lifestyle, including a private jet and a penthouse apartment.
Follieri settled that suit this year, and then was arrested in New York in April for writing a bad check for $215,000 to pay off (under court order) debts to a PR firm. He later made good on the check and charges were dropped. Now, a few short months later, he's in trouble in New York again. This time, it's not a civil suit or an arrest by the NYPD; it's an investigation by the New York State Attorney General himself. Apparently Follieri's latest "charitable" project, The Follieri Foundation, isn't filing its tax returns. The organization purports to provide vaccinations to "Third World children," amongst other things. However, since it hasn't been filing the tax forms required of charities, I guess it'd be hard for anyone to be sure what's going on with the foundation's money. Once the AG, Andrew Cuomo, became aware of the failure to file returns, his office launched an investigation into the charity's finances, and has now served The Follieri Foundation with subpoenas for its financial records.
More interesting, probably, to MamaPop readers is that Anne Hathaway was once on the board of this foundation, which I have to think means she is either kinda shady herself or really dumb, since she would obviously have been aware of the Burkle lawsuit and the fact that she was implicated in it. You'd think you'd want to keep away from this dude, or at least his foundations, after that. The New York Post contacted Hathaway's rep for comment on this latest nonsense, and was told that Hathaway knows nothing about it, having ceased to be a Follieri Foundation board member. Conveniently, the rep couldn't remember how long ago this ceasing to be a board member actually commenced. Uh huh.
My take? Shenanigans. I'm officially calling shenanigans, right now. You heard it here: shenanigans.
