Thomas Beatie Debuts His Baby Girl

It has only been three weeks since Thomas Beatie ‘the pregnant man’ gave birth to his daughter, Susan Juliette, and already he can’t take his eyes off of her. Susan Juliette, was born on June 29, weighing in at 9 lbs, 5 oz., and Thomas also became the first legally transgendered man to give birth. “She’s so precious, I just can’t stop staring at her,” Thomas [says]. “Just holding her is the best feeling in the world.” Susan – named after Thomas’s mother and conceived through artificial insemination with donor sperm – arrived after 40 hours of labor, with Nancy at Thomas’s side acting as his coach. “When Susan finally came out, it was like in slow motion,” says Thomas. “I was full of wonder.” Echoes Nancy: “There were tears of joy.” Right now the Beatie family is adjusting to their new schedule, Thomas’ wife, Nancy, is breastfeeding (with the help of hormones and a breast pump) and Thomas standing by to help. This week’s issue debuts Matthew McConaughey, his girlfriend, Camila Alves,and newborn son, Levi. And in an exclusive interview he was quite open on the experience of giving birth… On the labor process: We found a great rhythm. Contractions started kicking in. I sat there with her, right between her legs. We got tribal on it, we danced to it! I was DJ-ing this Brazilian music. On the hospital experience: I have it all chronicled. Becoming a dad is something I’ve dreamed of doing since I was 10. Becoming a father felt very, very natural. We were jamming! She was sweating. No painkiller, let’s go. She just clicked into that gear that only a woman has at a time like this. We’d been up for 40-something hours, and we went from dead tired to a really steadfast, ‘Let’s handle this… let’s stay in the rhythm. Don’t let the contraction be more than you.’ On the birth: We ended up having an epidural because, on the large contractions, the umbilical cord was being compressed. They went in and tried the vacuum. This is where I learned — and no one tells you this — but having a baby is a bloody, pukey, sweaty, primeval thing! And I mean that as a beautiful thing. It is wild. But the vacuum didn’t work, and the doctor said, ‘C-section.’ On meeting Levi for the first time: I said, ‘Come here, little man. I saw the pecker and screamed that we’d been right all along about him being a boy. Then I brought him over to her [Camila]. On who Levi looks like: “Everybody thinks he looks like me because of the hair and skin tone,” Camila says. “I think he looks more like Matthew every day.” I really can’t wait to see this little guy on a surfboard…just like dad! Alison and her husband, David Sanov, have just celebrated their eighth anniversary together, and have a son, Ben, 3 years old. “We found out that it’s a girl and we’re really excited about that,” said Alison, who is due on Jan. 20. And they still haven’t decided on a name, either. “It’s a battle we’re waging. It’s going to be a long time before we figure that out.” Alison also talked about morning sickness saying… “I have moments of pretty extreme morning sickness, which has not been my friend, but I get through it and I’m happy to hopefully be past it.” Alison is currently hosting The Biggest Loser and starring in Days As Our Lives.
